There were only about 20 families left after the federal housing authority tried to clear the land. The city of Los Angeles sent sheriff's deputies to Chavez Ravine to remove anyone who had refused to leave. What followed was a horrific scene of a family called the Arachigas being dragged out of their house. This was captured on camera by reporters and broadcast all over the country.
