Introduction

If you believe public services like water and electricity should be in some kind of public ownership, you've no party to vote for. The same is true if you think the defense of the realm is the most fundamental responsibility of government. If you hold both views as I do myself, you have no effective way of expressing them in a general election. These are not by any measure minority beliefs. Outside Westminster and the London-based media, they're shared by a British majority. It's hard to see how they can be regarded as controversial.
