Discovering the Northwest Passage
Giovanni de Verrazano was the first known European to explore the northeastern coast of the New World. He traveled through the Chesapeake Bay and eventually reached the western tip of Long Island, which is where New York City is today. A French explorer named Jacques Cartier explored part of the same region in the mid-1530s. His encounter with indigenous people along the St. Lawrence River led to France laying claim to the region.
