I think phenomenal consciousness had a function. And it came about relatively recently in evolution. It depended on two conditions being present. I've developed a neurophysiological model of how, in fact, this kind of experience could be generated. But what I don't think is that it certainly emerges with life or mind as a kind of natural follow-on. All for that matter, that if we make machines born more intelligent, it will just emerge as an unexpected add-on. That's the central question. And I shouldn't give them impression if I have that.
