AI: An Existential Threat?
Timothy Stanley: I just don't think there's going to be an objective answer of this. Some people have a very strong intuition that if something is smart enough, it'll just be able to outwit everybody and take over the world. The alternative view, which I more lean towards, that I call physicalism, says that intelligence is obviously useful, but not so much that we need to worry about one super intelligent AI taking over the world or anything like that. But what we want is sort of lock down the physical world to minimize the amount of damage that people do with their computers.
