The Dangers of Stochastic Parrots for the Humanities
The author of a paper on stochastic parrots for the humanities says that these models are dangerous but he's not convinced we've been alerted to the most important dangers yet. He argues that if people use them as their search engine they could end up with a hermetic cultural system that is almost impossible to break into or for one systems communicate to another. "That seems to me scarierYeah I think you get at what to me is potentially more scary which is that our culture will change"

Ted is a professor in the School of Information Sciences with an appointment in the Department of English at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Trained in English literary history, he turned his research focus to applying machine learning to large digital collections. His work explores literary patterns that become visible across long timelines when we consider many works at once—often, his work involves correcting and enriching digital collections to make them more amenable to interesting literary research.
