The Memoir of Mad Jack Barran
Barran was born with a club foot. He had an unhappy relationship with his mother, father died early. There's an undercurrent of depression and suicide in his ancestors. On his mother's side his maternal grandfather and great-grandfather would it be. Committed suicide by drowning. But I don't think there's much evidence that Barran himself was ever what he would call mad or insane. The swimming was interesting because he was, though he had this cop port, he was very athletic and anxious to compete with the boys.
