I was around when Hawking first announced the famous evaporation of black holes. I had sort of misgivings about whether that was really what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. But then I met somebody by chance who was a very internationally renowned climatologist. And he made me realize that the kind of mathematics I'd learned and even to some extent the physics that I'd learned was not actually as totally irrelevant as one might think at first sight in the world of climate physics.
