The operating system is in charge of isolating applications from each other. It acts as an intermediary between applications to make sure that, you know, your music player doesn't crash your web browser or that one of them doesn't hog too much of the system memory so that the others can keep running smoothly. However, that line is starting to get blurred a little bit.
