O'Neill's Calling Out in the Stage Direction
It's not even clear, he calls out in the stage direction this person is quoting from this book or this author. Otherwise, if you're not familiar with the work, it's not necessarily clear that the character is not extemporizing some poetry or quoting something. I mean, I certainly wouldn't have known any of them or a large portion of them were they not called out in thestage direction. There is an interesting tension here in so far as the Tyrones are Irish American families. But there is this tension between the Irish Americans who have become wealthy and educated and Tyrone is still convinced of the superiority of Irish culture to any other culture.
