Is There a Hierarchy of Stages?

I think it is quite clear that there is a hierarchy of stages. And he uses this imagery of height all the time. Its arlike ascendinga ascending at various stages. But i think what i agree with about what jonathan was r suggesting is it isn't like when you move on to the ethical stage, you leave behind the aesthetic stage altogether. So there is a distinction. There is a different attitude to life.
