The Two Sensations of Gagging

The two senses of gag are in fact related. Stopping from talking is one thing that gagging means. Gags like preventing someone, that's from the 1500s and then to gag like forcibly or authoritarianly stop somebody from talking about a topic,. We see that in the 1600s. So either of those have anything to do with a joke gag. Yes. I say yes because when you're laughing properly, like if you're doing like a good old belly laugh, you can't talk. Yeah. Same.
