The stakes of moment after moment are your own existence itself. The part that would link up with other people is your annihilation of another is only more validation of your winning. This isn't geopolitical confrontation kind of war. It's agency and autonomy. And I think Holden could imagine it that way, that they're surviving through the desert was part of that.
