The Legacy of the Civil Rights Commission
I can remember in 1984 when I was nominated to the Council on the Humanities. The senators who oversaw that process had managed to plant a story criticizing all the Reagan nominees as not having any knowledge of foreign languages. So we didn't tally down a long, considering their respect for truth. Nobody is equally well positioned to lead the nation through a deliberate reflection on what our policies accomplished and what the principles are that should sustain them. That's the reality of the Civil Rights Commission.
