Helga Votter, silva and nelson's careers almost precisely spanned the era in which containerisation took hold. During that time, it went from being a fantastic job that they loved to one that they got used to and tolerated. But they all think thetechnological change was inevitable. Helga: The water front was a unique kind of work. It was blue collar work, but it wasn't routine. We hear so often that automation eliminates drudgery. And sometimes interesting work gets wiped out too.
