The Conquest of Judges

The Israelites want their God to be more like the petty Canaanite gods. They even offer their own children as sacrifices in some of the most extreme circumstances. And so then we get this several hundred year era of the judges where everybody does whatever they see fit and there is no king. It's a horrible, deeply dark time where the redemptive plan looks like it's gone off the rails.
