The Diffusion of Solutions in Water
Gay Lusac convinced himself of this fact by a particular experiment, which he conducted in the cellars under the Paris Astronomical Observatory. A line of demarcation between the solution and the pure water will be visible, owing to their different coefficients of refraction. Graham showed that substances which rapidly diffuse through liquids are able to rapidly pass through membranes and crystallize. The diffusive power of a solution depends on time, and on the nature of the substance dissolved.
