The Importance of Flexibility
I dropped out of college after my sophomore year to become a rock and roll guitarist. After the third audition, they offered me a position in the band, but not as the lead guitarist. From there, dozens and dozens of times I would find that what I had set my eye on didn't happen. In science, I was going to study visual perception. Music cognition came up as an opportunity instead. It's hard for me to say that I'm worse off or better off. I'm certainly better off for being flexible in that rather than narrowly being fixated on one particular thing."
