Being optimistic was not only culturally wired, it was also financially wired. If you were just investing in growth stocks during that period, you did really well. But east coast finance culture is much more balanced. Because there's a report card every day when you're thinking about public markets. And i think that if you want to have unbounded optimism, you cannot be marked to market on a quarterly basis of the sort. You need to think about things in that sort of time horizon. A lot of v c funds now that had these amazing mark ups, and they were showing paper returns, not real returns, are now looking at a lot of those late stage investments and saying, well, shit
