Edgar Smith kidnaps Lefteria Osbun and stabs her to death in 1976. She survives, but he goes on the run for a while before being tracked down by his old editor at National Review. He claims that he went to Vicki's grave with contrition, but I think that's not necessarily true. The FBI shows up and arrests him under an assumed name.
