High in the atmosphere, ultra violet light can make oxygen react and form another gas called ozon. It provides a protective shield to break off the really harmful ultra violet light from reaching the surface. In the seventies, jonathan is aware that some scientists have concerns about this shield. Could it be thinning? Nothing he's seen rings a bell, but he keeps running the numbers from antarctica.
