Freemasonry - The Myths and Rituals
Freemasonry grew out of gatherings of stone masons who worked on major building sites in mediaeval europe. They adopted patron saints, created secret passwords and handshakes to distinguish members from non-members. New workers would have to practise and learn for several years before they were admitted as masters of the craft. It's what really makes it, gives it power and influence over people's lives - not affiliation with any particular political party or ideology but the myths that make it special.
