The Importance of the Rule of the Knowing
Plato argues that each human being has a sacred duty to be one's own judge. He also insists on the natural equality of human beings in their capacity to think for themselves. The education needed to create supremely wise rulers is so rigorous that only a few could get through it. Even the educated, after all, are vulnerable to the kinds of over confidence that feed into dogmatism and authoritarianism.
