Why Do We Mind Wander?

In approximately 35 to 50 % of our waking moments, our attention isn't necessarily focused on the task at hand. The fact that mind wandering happens so often tells us something like, ok, it's happening a lot, and it's not energetically free. It's costing rain a lot to be able to do this thing. So why do we have it, and what can we do about it? One idea is that it helped this notion of attentional cycling. Another may have to do with the way we consolidate information in our memory.
