If the nature of the call is respiratory distress or the patient's chief complaint is dyspnea or shortness of breath then the patient had better be on oxygen when the medics get there. I would rather put them on CPAP now while they're awake and conscious and they can manage their own airway versus waiting until they're ready to keel over dead. If you walk into a room and you think that the patient could benefit from CPAP if they're short of breath and they have rails or crackles and they're a cutie shorter breath, put them onCPAP.
