The London School of Medicine for Women didn't allow vivisections, so Shartow and Lindoff-Hagabe attended demonstrations at other institutions and organizations all around London. At some point they showed their notes to Stephen Coleridge, honorary secretary of the National Anti-Vivisection Society. Bayless's attorney contacted Coleridge saying that his statements about the vivisection were untrue and after some back and forth failed to reach any kind of resolution, Bayless sued Coleridge for libel.
