Every human being in every life form really has some genetic variations in it. Not every cell in your body has exactly the same genes, because of these mutations that occur. If a particular mutation helps the offspring survive and reproduce better, then it's going to get passed on to their offspring. And over the course of time, if it's really advantageous, it can spread to an entire population.
