Douglas Stuart on 'Shuggie Bain'
Louisiana Literature
The Glass Weagen Spirit
This is a novel where you could cry and you could laugh but there is something very light in it because this is a family falling apart but this is also resilience. I wanted the reader to feel a little bit tense because Shaggy doesn't have any control as a kid, he doesn't have agency over what's about to come his way. So whether that is violence or tenderness or humor or sadness. And so the reader should also feeling a little bit of kill or that little bit of tension on the page. You almost make me cry again.
