Admiral Laskarina Buba-Lina was born in prison. She took over her seafaring husband's shipping business and had more boats built, including a giant warship called Armageddon. If they actually did get blown to smithereens or damaged beyond repair, wood floats a lot more than metalwood. A good ship is going to last decades but anything that's old enough eventually will fail.
