The Story of Heinrich Schlemann
Heinrich Schlemann was born in Germany in January of 1822. His father was a Lutheran minister and is described as being poor, while his mother died in 1831 when he was only 9 years old. During his childhood his father had read both the Iliad and the Odyssey to him, which piqued his interest in history. He then travelled to Hamburg where he was able to gain employment as a cabin boy aboard a steamer that was headed to Venezuela. The steamer ran aground in a gale and never made it to its destination. Schlemann would work in a number of roles over the years before becoming an apprentice grocer at the age of 14.
