Cognitive science can create a synoptic integration by creating plausible constructs, theoretical ways of explanation. Newell and Simon are creating this powerful way of analyzing, formalizing, and mechanizing intelligence. It holds a promise for revealing things about intelligence that we didn't know before. But they were failing to notice that they had an assumption in their attempt to come up with a theoretical construct for explaining general problem solving.
