Carbonari numbered between 50 and a hundred thousand in january of 18 20. But with opportunity at hand and a population hungering for constitutional government, the carbonary membership exploded. A general named gelmo pepe was in prime position to effect a carbonary mutiny, slash cop slash revolution. General pepe decided that the revolution was, in fact, at hand. And he slipped out of naples on july fifth to go take command of the situation.
