The Predictability of History
The idea that large historical events are determined by luck is profoundly shocking. The fertilization of these three eggs had momentous consequences and it makes a joke of the idea that long term developments are predictable. This is one of the insights that my students have to walk away from, from my class on Jewish Christian relations. My students walk away from that class after we've talked about the Holocaust for weeks shocked.
