And do you have a particle that can go faster than the speed of light? How would you ever detect these things? It's actually not that hard. You start with a particle at one location and you fire it into space. But in principle ... somebody gets a cockamamie observation which would later be shown to be wrong. That was the key tip off immediately that nothing gets too far away from reality.
