Given its grand ambitions, it's not surprising that the book doesn't fully deliver. The four chapters about emptiness are so unclear that I still don't know whether or not Wright accidentally autocorrected affordance to essence in all of them. So why am I reviewing this disappointment of a book? Because beating my head against its inconsistencies helped me come a little closer to understanding how to be a better person. In The Last Hippie, Oliver Sacks tells the story of Greg F, a grateful dead van and one time acid head who joined the Hare Krishna temple in 1970. He seemed to be becoming more spiritual by the day, an amazing new serenity had taken hold of him.
