Is There a Lot of Compassion in the Bible?

I'm really quite struck with how evil people can be, and I don't know what it must be like if you can't use the word evil. Whereas I feel like I can because I believe in the divine. It's so interesting to see ourselves as just another species on the planet that behaves in many ways the way less intelligent behave. And then this type of survival of the fittest was inherently cruel.
