The canaanite woman is described as a syro phoenician in the gospel of mark. Why do you think matthew uses this particular term? In both cases, there is a discouraging response given and a persistent answer from christ that demonstrates, in both cases, great faith. These people are set forth not just as people that christ grudgingly lets go through, but rather as people who perseveres and persists and receives a reward.
