The orign szo keeper is the most popular open source library for this. Zo keeper is basically a little key value data base, but all of the keys and all the values are replicated. Every note has a copy of the entire data base, which is why it can't be that big. Theoretically it's great, but won't you go into the real world with latency and networks that can drop out and things like that? It just had huge limitations. And so you have to have some hacks in that overtime, those hacks got more and more refined.
