The British education system is geared towards producing the kind of men who can further the empire. He doesn't really get trapped in that in the same way as other people do because his parents keep him out of it for a much longer time. So when he's 12, he finally gets sent over to England to go to boarding school. And the fact that he goes so much later than his peers makes it harder for him.
