People used to say proudly, you know, like I'm colorblind. And that was proof of an evolved posture on race relations. It became a political tool largely because by the 1960s and especially the 1970s, people who recognized widespread racial disparities also recognized that we could not eliminate those racial disparities by ignoring them. We actually needed to take affirmative action in order to close those racial gaps.
