The Origin of Mars in the Ancient World

The ancients did not realize that the earth is a planet, or that mars was a ball of rock. And since the stars were identified with gods in the ancient world, mars often identified as a god. Part of it may simply be cultural diffusion. If you observe mars carefully, even with the naked eye, it looks more reddish than other stars. It's been associated with things connected to the color red.
