The Importance of Being a Marxist
Orwell: I was already a Marxist because we were in the depression. The elite for people would actually go out publicly to suit stations where they hold out a ball and be given suit. They always dressed up to the occasion. One sign of our deterioration is that our dress has become so informal. And then Marx comes along and offers his ready solution. He analyzes capitalism and tries to tell you just how to get rid of this. We always call for violent revolution. Almost every time it was a violent, because the capitalists weren't going to get it. You let go of their property. Orwell's limitations is that he remained a modern to the end.
