The Sociology of Happiness
Is it possible for modern society to create something that we genuinely could call happiness? Or are the other choices that are open to us so wide that they actually inevitably create discontent? It's a good question. Most things in life were an inverted U. I mean, there's a sweet spot in the middle. And that's what consumption is like. We are absolutely miserable and when we're poor. Once we get consumerism and markets and economic growth and economic progress, it's hugely beneficial to live people out of poverty. But then we can accumulate too much and become, essentially like addicts.
