They are not safe, exactly, but they're far less dangerous than the stars that birth them and their gravity is not in any way special. It's only because they are very dense that its possible so close to one that the diminishing gravity with distance is at such a scale that your head could be torn for your feet simply because gravity at your feet is much higher.
