The European Empires Used Authoritarian Rule to Control Indigena

Authoritarian rule was typically justified with reference to a key liberal legal doctrine known as the state of exception, or the state of emergency. This holds that the government is not bound by ordinary liberal laws when an extraordinary threat exists. For the european empires, indigenous populations were considered an extraordinary threat akin to a panademic or a military invasion or a natural disaster.
