He knew that if he could establish a positive relationship between these islamic empires and his own, his people would benefit tremendously. The shah killed all three of the mongol messengers and sent their mutilated bodies back to the court of jenghis khan. "The long troubled history of the middle east might have unfolded very differently had the ruler of kwarzam not responded in the way that he did," writes historian Peter Bergen.
