The Iliad and War

The Iliad makes war seem a massive, all-encompassing spectacle. Long portions of books 4, 5, and 8 are heaped with three to five line descriptions of how this fighter killed this other fighter. Warfare even before the Romans got it down to a science had already undergone a long and complex evolution. Homer's Iliad is a snapshot of one moment of this evolution taking place.
