The goal should be to clear the spine quickly but to be suspicious, Dr. Tillman says. Older patients who are in C-spine callers can develop pressure ulcers, pneumonia, respiratory failure and all sorts of complications with prolonged cervical mobilization. A serum lactate or base deficit will help you figure out if this patient has occult shock from a bleed somewhere. In many trauma centers they pan scan pretty much all polytrauma patients.
