Alaska airline's extensions of its lubrication interval for mcdonald douglas m d 80 horizontal stabilizer components, increased the likelihood that a mist or inadequate lubrication would result in excessive wear of jack screw assembly acme nut threads. The flight crews use of the autopilot while the horizontal stabilizer was jammed was not appropriate. Alaska airline's extension of the n plate check interval and the f a's approval of that extension allowed the accident. Acme nut threats to wear to failure without the opportunity for detection.
