S2E9: Genentech’s Aviv Regev on the Promise of Single Cell Genomics
Theory and Practice
The Role of Aviv in Understanding Gene Expression
In the human genome there are about 20,000 genes to the nearest approximation. In any given cell type, those genes are either on or off and they're not so much binary on or off. And what that means is that the genes are copied and turned into RNA, which makes protein. Never before could we kind of look at every gene in an organism as being on and how much. It's really knowing from other areas where we know that multi-modal integration is so successful that gives us the motivation to do those things.
